The Power and Beauty of the Small

Starting a new company is a challenge I really enjoy. It provides an incredible opportunity begin fresh, be creative, to think about how to approach professional life.

Back in 2006, when I was dreaming up my next venture, I knew I wanted my professional career to have some deeper purpose, some greater meaning. In the midst of brainstorming, my wife asked me a defining question: "how much money could we raise for charity if we got one penny per person in the US?" We realized that just one penny a person, per day, for one year equals over 1 billion dollars per year. Incredible. That is where our company roots began to grow: with the notion that something small and seemingly insignificant – like a penny – becomes a serious force when we work together and pool our efforts as a community.

So, taking this new framework, and applying it with technology, I started working through ways we could make the greatest impact for nonprofit companies. If we could use technology to help nonprofits by raising just one penny a person, per day, per year, we could enable every person to be a citizen philanthropist, and be a part of helping hundreds, even thousands, of cause-driven missions accomplish huge things.

This philosophy – taking one minute to do a kind thing, giving one penny to someone in need – is the foundation upon which our company is built. We have some specific ways we think we can accelerate nonprofit funding, community growth and awareness, by using social media. But in our philosophy, the product is secondary. First and most importantly, we want to help. We want to change the world, one small act at a time. And we want you to join us.

Let’s make a difference, together, right now.
